Detail Planting
Detail planting is the ingredient that brings colour, variety, seasonality and individual preference to the garden. In formal gardens this may be limited to block planted spring bulbs: allium and tulips or seasonal bedding in focal point urns.
In more informal gardens they provide variety and interest through different seasons: bulbs and primroses in spring; summer herbaceous planting in combination with shrubs and roses; autumn seed heads of grasses and foliage colouring; winter flowers of hellebores and Christmas box.
In wilder spaces they are wild flowers in the meadow or plants informally seeding around the garden such as foxgloves, verbena and teasel.
